Maintenance Levels

The maintenance of equipment /systems can be carried out at different levels depending upon the type of equipment and its place of use.

(1) Organization level

(2) Feild level

(3) Maintenance workshops /depot maintenance

(1) Organization levels : In the established organizations, the maintenance departments are set up to carry out the routine maintenance-related works for which the facilities must be made available.

Here normally the maintenance of minor nature such as periodic checkups, cleaning of equipment, minor adjustments, etc. is carried out. Usually the semi-skilled maintenance personnel are associated with execution of such maintenance works of minor nature. Personnel at this level cannot repair the removed components, which are forwarded to intermediate level. At this level, test equipment, tools, etc. can limit the maintenance work to a lower standard as compared to other levels.

(2) Feild level : In this case a mobile or semi-mobile team carries out the maintenance functions, where the equipment cannot be shifted to the workshop without its repair at the site. Here the maintenance is limited to the replacement of unserviceable assemblies. The available maintenance personnel are generally more skilled and better equipped than those at the organizational level and are charged with performing more detailed maintenance. At this level the equipment is repaired by the replacement of compponents/assemblies.

(3) Maintenance workshops/depot maintenance : This constitute the highest level of maintenance and provides the support for the works, which cannot be undertaken at the other levels. All facilities related to the maintenance functions are made available at these shops to carry out major jobs including overhauls and re-building of equipment/system. In addition, the necessary standards for equipment Calibration purposes are provided at this level. This level of maintenance therefore serves as a major supply base for intermediate/feild level maintenance facilities.

The facilities of testing, Calibration etc.are provided at these workshops. This type of maintenance system utilizes its facilities more effectively where similar type of equipment /system is used at different places.
